La chalcocite, un important minerai de cuivre, est composée de sulfure de cuivre(I) (Cu₂S). Ce minéral opaque présente une couleur allant du gris foncé au noir et un éclat métallique. D'une dureté de 2,5 à 3 sur l'échelle de Mohs, il appartient au système cristallin monoclinique. Le nom chalcocite dérive du grec « khalkos », qui signifie « cuivre ». On l'appelle aussi redruthite, cuivre vitreux ou chalcocite.
