La sussexite est un borate de manganèse extrêmement rare, de formule chimique MnBO₂(OH). Elle se présente généralement sous forme de cristaux prismatiques monocliniques, souvent fibreux. Ce minéral arbore des couleurs allant du blanc au rose et au blanc jaunâtre, avec un éclat nacré. D'une dureté Mohs de 3 et d'une densité de 3,12, il est relativement tendre et dense. Il doit son nom au district minier de Franklin, situé dans le comté de Sussex, au New Jersey, où il a été identifié pour la première fois en 1868.
La franklinite est un minéral oxyde qui fait partie de la série du fer (Fe) au sein du sous-groupe normal du spinelle, caractérisé par la formule chimique Zn2+Fe23+O4.
