QUARTZ - AMETHYST
QUARTZ - AMETHYST
SPECIMEN NR #:
Amethyst is a transparent, coarse-grained form of the silica mineral quartz, prized as a semiprecious gemstone for its distinctive violet hue. While it shares the physical characteristics of quartz, amethyst has a higher concentration of iron oxide (Fe2O3) compared to other quartz varieties, which is believed to contribute to its coloration. Alternative explanations for its color include the presence of manganese or hydrocarbons. The color of amethyst can be altered or removed through heating, which can transform it into the yellow variant known as citrine; most commercially available citrine is produced this way. Significant deposits of amethyst can be found in locations such as Brazil, Uruguay, Ontario, and North Carolina.
