Amethyst is a semiprecious gemstone, a violet variant of quartz, deriving its name from the Koine Greek term αμέθυστος (amethystos), which combines the prefix α- (a-, meaning "not") with μεθύσκω (methysko) or μεθώ (metho), translating to "intoxicate." This nomenclature reflects the ancient belief that the stone could safeguard its wearer from drunkenness. The Ancient Greeks not only adorned themselves with amethyst but also crafted drinking vessels from it, convinced of its protective qualities against intoxication.

This specimen is artificially coloured. Acquired in the early 1980s, it was not widely known that genuine white quartz was being dyed into more valuable colors in China. This serves as an excellent educational example. Observing the top of the crystal reveals dye present in the cracks, whereas natural amethyst would exhibit a consistent purple hue throughout the entire crystal. In this case, the color is only visible on the surface and within the cracks.
