PRASIOLITE (GREEN QUARTZ)
PRASIOLITE (GREEN QUARTZ)
SPECIMEN NR #:1935-16
Prasiolite, commonly referred to as green quartz, green amethyst, or vermarine, is a green variant of quartz. Since the 1950s, the majority of natural prasiolite has been sourced from a small mine in Brazil, although it has also been extracted from the Lower Silesia region in Poland and the Thunder Bay area in Canada.
The green hue of prasiolite is attributed to iron impurities within its crystal structure, with variations in color resulting from the concentration of iron and the geological conditions present during its formation. Additionally, there has been a practice in China of artificially coloring quartz green and marketing it as "green quartz," which is misleading.
Location: RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL (obtained in 1982)
Quartz is a robust crystalline mineral made up of silica, or silicon dioxide. Its structure consists of a continuous arrangement of SiO4 silicon-oxygen tetrahedra, where each oxygen atom is shared between two tetrahedra, resulting in the chemical formula SiO2. This classification places quartz as a framework silicate mineral in terms of structure and as an oxide mineral in terms of composition. It ranks as the second most prevalent mineral in the continental crust of Earth, following feldspar.
