Cubanit ist ein Kupfer-Eisen-Sulfid-Mineral, das typischerweise als geringfügiges Alterationsmineral in magmatischen Sulfidlagerstätten vorkommt. Seine chemische Formel ist CuFe2S3, und es weist eine bronze- bis messinggelbe Färbung auf. Auf der Mohs-Härteskala liegt Cubanit zwischen 3,5 und 4 und besitzt ein orthorhombisches Kristallsystem. Obwohl Cubanit chemisch dem Chalkopyrit ähnelt, ist es aufgrund seiner spezifischen Kristallisationsanforderungen seltener. Es kommt hauptsächlich in Hochtemperatur-Hydrothermal-Mineralvorkommen vor, oft in Verbindung mit Pyrrhotin und Pentlandit, und bildet sich durch Entmischung aus Chalkopyrit bei Temperaturen zwischen 200 und 210 °C. Wird es Temperaturen von über 210 °C ausgesetzt, wandelt sich Cubanit in Isocubanit um, wobei es seine magnetischen Eigenschaften und seine orthorhombische Struktur verliert. Diese Umwandlung ist beim Abkühlen irreversibel. Cubanit wurde auch in Chondriten und Staubkornproben nachgewiesen, was die Genauigkeit der Kupferisotopenanalyse verbessert.
Der Name "Cubanit" leitet sich vom spanischen Begriff "Cubano" ab, was kubanisch bedeutet, kombiniert mit dem Suffix "-it", das üblicherweise für Mineralien verwendet wird. Es wurde erstmals 1843 im Mayarí-Baracoa-Gürtel der Provinz Holguín, Kuba, identifiziert und wird in bestimmten Literaturen gelegentlich als Barracanit bezeichnet.
