Safflorit ist ein seltenes Mineral, bestehend aus Kobalteisenarsenid, dargestellt durch die chemische Formel (Co,Fe)As2. Während reiner Safflorit als CoAs2 identifiziert wird, enthält er typischerweise Eisen. Dieses Mineral gehört zur Löllingit-Gruppe, die eine Substitutionsreihe von Arseniden aufweist; Löllingit enthält über fünfzig Prozent Eisen, während Rammelsbergit mehr als fünfzig Prozent Nickel enthält. Zusätzlich existiert eine parallele Reihe von Antimonid-Mineralien.
Safflorit und seine verwandten Mineralien kristallisieren im orthorhombischen System, wobei sie opake graue bis weiße massive oder strahlige Formen aufweisen, während Klinosafflorit monokline Symmetrie zeigt. Es hat eine Mohs-Härte von 4,5 und eine spezifische Dichte im Bereich von 6,9 bis 7,3, wobei Zwillingsbildung häufig ist, oft resultierend in sternförmigen Zwillingen.
Erstmalig im Jahr 1835 aus dem Schneeberg im Erzgebirge in Deutschland beschrieben, wird Safflorit typischerweise zusammen mit anderen Arsenid-Mineralien in Silberbergbaugebieten gefunden und kann in sekundären Umgebungen zu Arsenat Erythrit umgewandelt werden.
Silber, dargestellt durch das Symbol Ag (vom lateinischen Wort argentum, das vom proto-indoeuropäischen Begriff h₂erǵ mit der Bedeutung „glänzend, weiß“ stammt), ist ein chemisches Element mit der Ordnungszahl 47. Dieses weiche, glänzende Übergangsmetall ist bekannt für seine außergewöhnliche elektrische und thermische Leitfähigkeit sowie seine hohe Reflektivität, die die aller anderen Metalle übertrifft. In der Natur kommt Silber in der Erdkruste in seiner nativen Form sowie in Legierungen mit Gold und anderen Metallen und in Mineralien wie Argentit und Chlorargyrit vor. Der Großteil der Silberproduktion fällt als Nebenprodukt bei den Raffinationsprozessen von Kupfer, Gold, Blei und Zink an.
