Samarskit ist eine Reihe von Seltenerdmineralien, zu denen Samarskit-(Y) und Samarskit-(Yb) gehören. Die chemische Zusammensetzung von Samarskit-(Y) wird als (YFe3+Fe2+U,Th,Ca)2(Nb,Ta)2O8 dargestellt, während Samarskit-(Yb) die Formel (YbFe3+)2(Nb,Ta)2O8 hat. Eine alternative Darstellung für Samarskit-(Y) ist (Y,Fe3+,U)(Nb,Ta)O4.
Dieses Mineral kristallisiert in der orthorhombisch-dipyramidalen Klasse und erscheint typischerweise als schwarze bis gelblich-braune, gedrungene Prismen, obwohl es häufiger in anhedralen Formen vorkommt. Proben mit erhöhtem Urangehalt weisen oft metamikte Eigenschaften auf und sind mit einer gelb-braunen erdigen Schicht überzogen.
Samarskit ist hauptsächlich in Seltenerd-reichen Granitpegmatiten zu finden, wo er zusammen mit anderen seltenen Mineralien wie Columbit, Zirkon, Monazit, Uraninit, Aeschynit, Magnetit, Albit, Topas, Beryll, Granat, Muskovit und Biotit vorkommt. Das Mineral wurde erstmals 1847 an einem Fundort in Miass, in den Ilmenbergen der südlichen Uralregion Russlands, identifiziert. Das Element Samarium wurde 1879 aus Samarskit isoliert und wurde zu Ehren von Oberst Vasili Samarsky-Bykhovets, einem russischen Bergbaubeamten, benannt.
Samarskit-(Yb) wurde erst 2004 an einem Fundort im South Platte Pegmatit-Distrikt in Jefferson County, Colorado, identifiziert.
