Smithsonit, auch Zinkspat genannt, ist die Mineralvariante von Zinkkarbonat (ZnCO3). Ursprünglich wurde es mit Hemimorphit verwechselt, bis festgestellt wurde, dass es sich um verschiedene Minerale handelt. Ihr ähnliches Aussehen führte dazu, dass der Begriff Calamin für beide verwendet wurde, was zu Missverständnissen führte. Der Name Smithsonit wurde 1832 von François Sulpice Beudant verliehen, um den englischen Wissenschaftler James Smithson zu ehren, der das Mineral 1802 erstmals beschrieb.
Dieses trigonale Mineral weist eine Reihe von Farben auf und wird selten in gut ausgebildeten Kristallen gefunden, sondern erscheint typischerweise als erdige, botryoidale Massen. Es hat eine Mohshärte von 4,5 und ein spezifisches Gewicht von 4,4 bis 4,5.
Hemimorphit ist eine chemische Verbindung, die durch die Formel Zn4(Si2O7)(OH)2·H2O dargestellt wird und ein Bestandteil des Minerals Calamin ist. Dieses Silikatmineral wurde zusammen mit Smithsonit (ZnCO3) historisch aus den oberen Bereichen von Zink- und Bleierz abgebaut. Ursprünglich wurden beide Minerale als identisch angesehen und unter dem Namen Calamin zusammengefasst. Im späteren Teil des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde jedoch festgestellt, dass diese unterschiedlichen Verbindungen trotz ihrer großen Ähnlichkeit im Calamin koexistieren.
