Aragonite in India encompasses its natural occurrences, industrial applications, and commercial market for this specific form of calcium carbonate. Although aragonite has the same chemical formula as the more prevalent calcite (CaCO₃), it crystallizes in a distinct orthorhombic structure, which enhances its value for specialized industrial uses and for mineral collectors. In terms of geological occurrences, pure aragonite deposits are not as abundant in India as calcite, but there are some notable locations. In Maharashtra, particularly in the Mumbai Suburban District, rare gem-quality elongated aragonite crystals have been found alongside small prehnite crystals in the volcanic traprocks of the Konkan Division. In Rajasthan, the Sambhar Salt Lake in the Nagaur District showcases documented aragonite formations due to its evaporite lake environment. Additionally, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, unique formations of aragonite, vaterite, and calcite have been identified in the ancient plasterwork of the 7th-century Alampur temples, altered over time by river submergence and natural chemical processes.
