CHALCANTHITE CABINET

CHALCANTHITE CABINET

$132.00 AUD

Chalcanthite is a hydrous copper sulfate that can be found naturally. However, it dissolves very easily in water.  Copper sulfate (industrially made), is frequently found in chemistry kits for teenagers and is utilized in undergraduate laboratory experiments.

It serves as a medium for crystal growth in educational settings and is also employed in copper electroplating activities, despite its hazardous nature. This compound is often used to illustrate exothermic reactions, particularly when steel wool or magnesium ribbon is immersed in a CuSO4 aqueous solution. Additionally, it demonstrates the concept of mineral hydration; when the blue pentahydrate form is heated, it transforms into a white anhydrous form as the water evaporates.

Reintroducing water to the anhydrous compound restores the blue pentahydrate form. Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate can be easily obtained through crystallization from a hygroscopic copper(II) sulfate solution.
