QUARTZ, AMETHYST ROSE WITH A COPPER MINERAL, Minas Gerais, BRAZIL (large cabinet)
$495.00
Amethyst is a semiprecious gemstone, a violet variant of quartz, deriving its name from the Koine Greek term αμÎθυστος (amethystos), which combines the prefix α- (a-, meaning "not") with μεθÏσκω (methysko) or μεθώ (metho), translating to "intoxicate." This nomenclature reflects the ancient belief that the stone could safeguard its wearer from drunkenness. The Ancient Greeks not only adorned themselves with amethyst but also crafted drinking vessels from it, convinced of its protective qualities against intoxication.
During excavation, this piece broke and has been mounted together. However, this is not visible when exhibit.
