Scolecite is a rare tectosilicate mineral classified within the zeolite group, characterized as a hydrated calcium silicate with the chemical formula CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O. It contains only trace amounts of sodium and potassium that can replace calcium, while barium, strontium, iron, and magnesium are notably absent. Scolecite shares an isostructural relationship with the sodium-calcium zeolite mesolite and the sodium zeolite natrolite, although it does not form a continuous chemical series with either. First described in 1813, its name is derived from the Greek word σκώληξ (sko-lecks), meaning "worm," a reference to its behavior when exposed to a blowpipe flame.
