It was first identified by mineralogist R H Solly in 1905 from specimens collected at the Lengenbach quarry near Binn, Switzerland. The mineral is named in honor of Herbert Smith, who served as an assistant in the mineralogy department of the British Museum (Natural History). Notably, smithite is a dimorph of trechmannite.
Imhofite, Tl5.8As15.4S26 named after the professional mineral collector Joseph Imhof (1902 - 16 June 1969), Binn, Binn valley, Switzerland. Monoclinic. Light pure white, somewhat cream-colored compared to galena.
