Tektites, derived from the Ancient Greek word for 'molten,' are small glassy fragments that form from debris ejected during meteorite impacts. First named by Austrian geologist Franz Eduard Suess, these bodies typically measure from millimeters to centimeters, with the smallest being referred to as microtektites. They possess a consistent composition, very low levels of water and volatiles, and are rich in lechatelierite, while lacking microscopic crystals known as microlites. Unlike local bedrock or sediments, tektites are found in widespread strewn fields, making them unique geological specimens.

What sets tektites apart from volcanic glasses like obsidian is their distinct physical properties. Tektites are entirely glassy and devoid of microlites or phenocrysts, which are common in terrestrial volcanic glasses. Although they have a high silica content, their overall chemical and isotopic makeup resembles that of shales rather than volcanic rocks. Additionally, tektites contain almost no water, which is a key factor in differentiating them from volcanic glasses. When heated, terrestrial volcanic glasses become foamy due to their water content, while tektites produce minimal bubbles, highlighting their unique characteristics.
