Wavellite is a mineral composed of aluminium basic phosphate, represented by the formula Al3(PO4)2(OH, F)3·5H2O. While distinct crystals are uncommon, it typically appears as translucent green clusters that are either radial or spherical. The mineral was first identified in 1805 at High Down, Filleigh, Devon, England, and was named by William Babington to honor Dr. William Wavell, a physician and naturalist from Devon who highlighted its significance to the mineralogical community. Wavellite is commonly found alongside crandallite and variscite within fractures of aluminous metamorphic rocks, particularly in hydrothermal environments and phosphate rock deposits, with notable occurrences in the Mount Ida area of the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas.
