Acanthit ist ein Silbersulfidmineral, das durch die chemische Formel Ag2S dargestellt wird. Es kristallisiert im monoklinen System und bleibt als Silbersulfid bei Temperaturen unter 173 °C (343 °F) stabil, während Argentit bei höheren Temperaturen stabil ist. Kühlt Argentit unter diesen Schwellenwert ab, wandelt sich seine kubische Struktur in die monokline Struktur des Akanthits um, der sich auch direkt bei Temperaturen unter 173 °C bilden kann. Akanthit ist die einzige stabile Form von Silbersulfid bei typischen Umgebungstemperaturen.

Dieses Mineral findet sich häufig in hydrothermalen Adern mit mäßig niedriger Temperatur und in Gebieten der supergenen Anreicherung, oft zusammen mit gediegenem Silber, Pyrargyrit, Proustit, Polybasit, Stephanit, Aguilarit, Galenit, Chalkopyrit, Sphalerit, Calcit und Quarz. Akanthit wurde erstmals 1855 im Bezirk Jáchymov im Erzgebirge identifiziert, heute Teil der Region Karlsbad in der Tschechischen Republik. Sein Name leitet sich vom griechischen Wort „akantha“ ab, was Dorn oder Pfeil bedeutet und seine charakteristische Kristallform widerspiegelt.
