Anhydrit, bekannt als wasserfreies Calciumsulfat, hat die chemische Formel CaSO4 und kristallisiert im orthorhombischen System, wobei es eine perfekte Spaltung entlang dreier Symmetrieebenen aufweist. Im Gegensatz zu den orthorhombischen Sulfaten von Barium (Baryt) und Strontium (Coelestin) ist es trotz ähnlicher chemischer Formeln nicht isomorph mit diesen. Gut ausgebildete Kristalle sind relativ selten, da das Mineral typischerweise in Spaltmassen vorkommt. Es hat eine Mohs-Härte von 3,5 und eine Dichte von 2,9, wobei die Farben von weiß bis zu Grau-, Blau- oder Violetttönen reichen. Die am stärksten entwickelte Spaltung zeigt einen Perlmuttglanz, während andere Oberflächen glasartig erscheinen. Anhydrit wandelt sich bei Kontakt mit Wasser leicht in Gips (CaSO4·2H2O) um, und dieser Prozess ist reversibel; Erhitzen von Gips oder Calciumsulfat-Hemihydrat auf etwa 200 °C (400 °F) kann Anhydrit unter normalen atmosphärischen Bedingungen regenerieren. In Ganglagerstätten findet man Anhydrit oft zusammen mit Calcit, Halit und verschiedenen Sulfiden, darunter Galenit, Chalkopyrit, Molybdänit und Pyrit.
