Elbait ist ein Natrium-, Lithium- und Aluminium-Borosilikatmineral mit der chemischen Formel Na(Li1.5Al1.5)Al6Si6O18(BO3)3(OH)4 und gehört zur Turmalingruppe der sechsgliedrigen Ringsilikate. Dieses Mineral existiert in drei Reihen: Dravit, Fluor-Liddicoatit und Schörl, was bedeutet, dass natürlich vorkommende Exemplare mit der idealen Endgliedformel selten sind. Als Edelstein ist Elbait wegen seiner vielfältigen Farbpalette und Kristallqualität sehr begehrt. Erstmals 1913 auf der Insel Elba, Italien, identifiziert, wurde er seitdem in verschiedenen Regionen weltweit gefunden, darunter ein bedeutender Fund 1994 in O'Grady Lakes im Yukon, Kanada. Elbait bildet sich typischerweise in magmatischen und metamorphen Gesteinen, oft zusammen mit Mineralien wie Lepidolith, Mikroklin und Spodumen in Granitpegmatiten, sowie Andalusit und Biotit in Schiefer und Molybdänit und Kassiterit in hydrothermalen Lagerstätten. Dieses Mineral ist allochromatisch, sodass Spurenverunreinigungen den Kristallen Farbe verleihen können, und es zeigt einen starken Pleochroismus, der ein vollständiges Farbspektrum, manchmal mit mehrfarbiger Zonierung, aufweist. Zusätzlich enthalten einige Elbaitkristalle mikroskopisch kleine nadelartige Einschlüsse, die beim Schleifen zu Cabochons einen Katzenaugeneffekt erzeugen.
