Zirkon ist ein Mineral, das der Nesosilikate-Gruppe zugeordnet wird und eine primäre Quelle für Zirconium-Metall darstellt. Seine chemische Bezeichnung ist Zirconium(IV)-Silikat, dargestellt durch die Formel ZrSiO4. Eine empirische Formel, die den Substitutionsbereich in Zirkon veranschaulicht, ist (Zr1–y, REEy)(SiO4)1–x(OH)4x–y. Dieses Mineral entsteht aus Silikatschmelzen und enthält typischerweise signifikante Mengen an inkompatiblen Elementen mit hoher Feldstärke, wobei Hafnium üblicherweise in Konzentrationen zwischen 1% und 4% gefunden wird. Zirkon weist eine tetragonale Kristallstruktur auf und seine natürlichen Farben können von farblos bis zu Gelb-Gold-, Rot-, Braun-, Blau- und Grüntönen reichen.

Der Begriff "Zirkon" leitet sich vom persischen Wort zargun ab, was "goldfarben" bedeutet. Dies entwickelte sich zu "Jargoon", einem Namen, der für hellere Zirkone verwendet wurde. Der englische Begriff "zircon" stammt vom deutschen Zirkon, was diese sprachliche Entwicklung widerspiegelt. Zusätzlich werden gelbe, orangefarbene und rote Zirkon-Varietäten als "Hyazinth" bezeichnet, ein Name, der von der Blume Hyazinthe inspiriert ist und seine Wurzeln im Altgriechischen hat.
