HAUSMANNITE
HAUSMANNITE
SPECIMEN NR #:954
Hausmannite is a rare, complex, mixed oxide of manganese, comprising both divalent and trivalent manganese. Its chemical formula is expressed as MnIIMnIII2O4, which can also be simplified to MnO·Mn2O3 or Mn3O4, similar to the notation used for magnetite (Fe3O4), an iron oxide. This mineral is classified within the spinel group and crystallizes in a tetragonal structure. Hausmannite appears as a brown to black metallic mineral, exhibiting a Mohs hardness of 5.5 and a specific gravity of 4.8.
This specimen is an explorer specimen as it contains several other minerals, like quartz, calcite, pyrite. Pyrolusite and Psilomelane could be on this specimen, but needs confirmation.
