Magnetite is a significant iron ore mineral characterized by the chemical formula Fe2+Fe3+2O4. As one of the iron oxides, it exhibits ferrimagnetic properties, meaning it is attracted to magnets and can be magnetized to form a permanent magnet. Aside from extremely rare native iron deposits, magnetite is the most magnetic naturally occurring mineral on Earth. Naturally magnetized fragments of magnetite, known as lodestone, were instrumental in the early discovery of magnetism by ancient civilizations, as they could attract small iron objects. This mineral typically appears black or brownish-black, possesses a metallic sheen, has a Mohs hardness ranging from 5 to 6, and produces a black streak when scratched.
