Amethyst is a semiprecious gemstone, a violet variant of quartz, deriving its name from the Koine Greek term αμέθυστος‚ (amethystos), which combines the prefix (a-, meaning "not") with methysko) or metho, translating to "intoxicate." This nomenclature reflects the ancient belief that the stone could safeguard its wearer from drunkenness. The Ancient Greeks not only adorned themselves with amethyst but also crafted drinking vessels from it, convinced of its protective qualities against intoxication.
