Shigaite is an extremely mineral characterized by the chemical formula NaAl3(Mn2+)6(SO4)2(OH)18·12H2O, typically found in the form of small hexagonal crystals or delicate coatings. It was first identified in 1985 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, and its chemical composition underwent significant revision in 1996, revealing sodium as a previously unrecognized component.
Shigaite appears as hexagonal tabular crystals that can reach sizes of up to 2 cm (0.79 in) or as thin films and coatings. The mineral exhibits a range of colors, including yellow, burnt orange, brown, and black. It is commonly found in metamorphosed manganese ore deposits and serves as the Mn2+ analogue of motukoreaite.
