Silver, represented by the symbol Ag (from the Latin word argentum, which originates from the Proto-Indo-European term *h₂erǵ meaning 'shiny, white'), is a chemical element with the atomic number 47. This soft, lustrous transition metal is renowned for its exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as its high reflectivity, surpassing that of all other metals. In nature, silver occurs in the Earth's crust in its native form, as well as in alloys with gold and other metals, and within minerals like argentite and chlorargyrite. The majority of silver production comes as a byproduct during the refining processes of copper, gold, lead, and zinc.

Platinum, denoted by the symbol Pt and atomic number 78, is a dense and malleable transition metal characterized by its silverish-white hue and exceptional resistance to reactivity. Its name derives from the Spanish term "platina," a diminutive of "plata," meaning silver. As a member of the platinum group and group 10 in the periodic table, platinum has six naturally occurring isotopes and is one of the rarer elements found in the Earth's crust, with an average abundance of about 5 μg/kg. Predominantly sourced from nickel and copper ores, the majority of platinum production—approximately 80%—comes from South Africa. Due to its limited availability and significant applications, platinum is highly valued as a precious metal commodity. Known for its noble characteristics, platinum exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance, even at elevated temperatures, and is often found in its native form. Historically, it was utilized by pre-Columbian South American cultures for crafting artifacts and gained attention in Europe in the 16th century, with scientific interest piqued following Antonio de Ulloa's 1748 report on this unique metal from Colombia.
