SULFUR
SULFUR
SPECIMEN NR #:928
Sulfur, represented by the symbol S and atomic number 16, is a chemical element that is abundant, multivalent, and nonmetallic. Typically, sulfur atoms aggregate to form cyclic octatomic molecules with the formula S8 under standard conditions. At room temperature, it appears as a bright yellow crystalline solid. This element ranks as the tenth most abundant in the universe and the fifth most prevalent on Earth. While it can be found in its native form, sulfur primarily exists as sulfide and sulfate minerals. Known since ancient times, it has been referenced in cultures such as those of India, Greece, China, and Egypt. Historically, sulfur has been referred to as brimstone, meaning "burning stone." Most elemental sulfur is produced as a byproduct during the extraction of sulfur from natural gas and petroleum. Its primary commercial application is in the manufacture of sulfuric acid, which is essential for sulfate and phosphate fertilizers, along with various chemical processes. Additionally, sulfur is utilized in products like matches, insecticides, and fungicides. Many sulfur compounds are known for their distinctive odors, contributing to the scents associated with natural gas, skunk spray, bad breath, grapefruit, and garlic, while hydrogen sulfide is responsible for the smell of rotten eggs.
