Chlorargyrit, die extrem seltene Mineralform von Silberchlorid (AgCl), wird hauptsächlich als sekundäres Mineral gefunden, das aus der Oxidation von Silberlagerstätten entsteht. Es kristallisiert in der isometrisch-hexoktaedrischen Klasse und erscheint typischerweise in massiven oder säulenartigen Formen, obwohl es auch als farblose bis gelbe kubische Kristalle gefunden werden kann. Bemerkenswert ist, dass sich seine Farbe bei Lichteinwirkung nach Braun oder Violett ändert. Mit einer Mohs-Härte von 1 bis 2 ist es relativ weich und hat eine spezifische Dichte von 5,55, was es recht dicht macht. Auch als Cerargyrit bekannt, wird es unter Wüstenbedingungen als Hornsilber bezeichnet. Eine Variante namens Bromchlorargyrit oder Embolit ist ebenfalls weit verbreitet. Dieses Mineral ist wasserunlöslich und wird oft zusammen mit gediegenem Silber, Cerussit, Iodargyrit, Atacamit, Malachit, Jarosit und verschiedenen Eisen-Mangan-Oxiden gefunden. Chlorargyrit wurde erstmals 1875 im Broken Hill Distrikt in New South Wales, Australien, identifiziert, wobei die Lagerstätte Bridal Chamber in Lake Valley, New Mexico, fast reines Chlorargyrit enthielt. Der Name leitet sich vom griechischen Wort „chloros“ (blassgrün) und dem lateinischen Begriff für Silber, „argentum“, ab.
