La coronadite constitue le pôle principal du groupe des coronadites, qui comprend des tectomanganates caractérisés par une structure en tunnel 2 × 2. Ce minéral doit son nom à Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, explorateur du sud-ouest des États-Unis. Son nom a été proposé par Waldemar Lindgren en 1905 [2]. Chimiquement, elle est apparentée à la ferricoronadite, un analogue du Fe<sup>3+</sup>, ainsi qu'à la cryptomélane, à l'hollandite, à la manjiroïte et à la strontiomélane.
La smithsonite , ou spath zincifère, est la variante minérale du carbonate de zinc (ZnCO₃). Initialement, elle fut confondue avec l'hémimorphite, avant qu'il ne soit établi qu'il s'agissait de minéraux distincts. Leur apparence similaire a conduit à l'utilisation du terme « calamine » pour les deux, engendrant des malentendus. Le nom de smithsonite fut donné en 1832 par François Sulpice Beudant en hommage au scientifique anglais James Smithson, qui décrivit ce minéral pour la première fois en 1802.
Ce minéral trigonal présente une gamme de couleurs et se trouve rarement sous forme de cristaux bien formés ; il apparaît généralement comme une masse botryoïde terreuse. Sa dureté Mohs est de 4,5 et sa densité se situe entre 4,4 et 4,5.
