Stolzite is a mineral classified as lead tungstate, with the chemical formula PbWO4. It shares similarities with wulfenite, which has the same formula but features molybdenum in place of tungsten. This mineral crystallizes in the tetragonal system and exhibits dimorphism with the monoclinic form known as raspite. Stolzite crystals, such as those found in the Darwin District of Inyo County, California, possess optical transparency akin to glass while exhibiting a significantly higher density of 8.28 g/cm³ compared to approximately 2.2 g/cm³ for fused silica. Their unique properties make them valuable as scintillators in particle physics, particularly due to their short radiation length, low Molière radius, rapid scintillation response, and resistance to radiation damage. Notably, lead tungstate crystals are utilized in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the Compact Muon Solenoid. First described in 1820 by August Breithaupt, who referred to it as Scheelbleispath, the mineral was later named stolzite by Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger in 1845, in honor of Joseph Alexi Stolz. Stolzite typically forms in oxidized hydrothermal tungsten-lead ore deposits, often found alongside minerals such as raspite, cerussite, anglesite, pyromorphite, and mimetite.

If your item arrives damaged, we kindly ask that you provide a short, continuous video showing the specimen from at least six angles. You can simply hold it in your hands and gently rotate it while filming. Please also include a clear view of the package label in the video so we can assist you as quickly as possible.
For all items reported as damaged or broken, we do require the item to be returned to us before a refund can be processed.
Return shipping costs are initially the responsibility of the customer. However, if your claim is approved after review, we will reimburse your reasonable return postage costs.
