Wulfenit ist ein Mineral, das aus Bleimolybdat besteht und durch die chemische Formel PbMoO4 dargestellt wird. Es bildet sich typischerweise als dünne, tafelige Kristalle, die eine lebendige Farbpalette von leuchtendem Orangerot bis Gelborange und gelegentlich Braun aufweisen, mit erheblichen Farbvariationen. In seiner gelben Variante wird es manchmal als "Gelbbleierz" bezeichnet.
Dieses Mineral kristallisiert im tetragonalen System und kann als gedrungene, pyramidale oder tafelige Formen sowie als erdige, körnige Aggregate auftreten. Wulfenit wird häufig an verschiedenen Orten gefunden, oft als sekundäres Mineral in den oxidierten Zonen von Bleierzlagerstätten, und dient als sekundäre Molybdänquelle, was es zu einem begehrten Sammlerstück macht.
Wulfenit wurde 1845 an einem Fundort in Bad Bleiberg, Kärnten, Österreich erstmals identifiziert und zu Ehren des österreichischen Mineralogen Franz Xavier von Wulfen benannt. Es ist typischerweise mit anderen Mineralien wie Cerussit, Anglesit, Smithsonit, Hemimorphit, Vanadinit, Pyromorphit, Mimetit, Descloizit, Plattnerit und verschiedenen Eisen- und Manganoxiden in oxidierten hydrothermalen Bleilagerstätten verbunden.
